Switching from TextExpander

Bring your TextExpander snippets into Chrome.
One subscription for the whole stack.

Export your groups from TextExpander, drop the files into Toolbox, and type the same abbreviations in Gmail, Notion, Slack and any other text box in Chrome. Templates are one tool in a side panel that also has a screen recorder, a PDF editor and short links.

Who it's for

Made for you if…

  • You use TextExpander mostly in the browser: email, help desks, CRMs and docs.
  • Your snippets are text with fill-ins and dates, not scripts.
  • You'd rather pay one subscription for your browser tools than one for each.

Move from TextExpander to Toolbox

Each group comes over as a folder, with its snippets' abbreviations. Fill-ins, popup menus, dates, the clipboard and the cursor become Toolbox fields; script snippets are skipped.

  1. In the TextExpander web app, open Import/Export in the sidebar and go to the Export tab.
  2. Click the Export icon next to each snippet group you want. Each group downloads as its own CSV file.
  3. In Toolbox, open Templates on the web, press Import, choose TextExpander and drop the files one at a time.
  4. Check the preview, then import. Each group's name becomes its folder.

What comes over

  • Snippets with their abbreviations and labels
  • Groups, as folders
  • Fill-in fields, fill-in areas and popup menus, as Toolbox fill-in fields
  • Dates and times, the clipboard and the cursor position

What doesn't

  • Script snippets: they're skipped
  • Other commands Toolbox can't convert: they stay in the text as written, and the preview lists them
  • Expansion outside the browser: Toolbox works in Chrome
Import from TextExpander You'll see what comes over before anything is added.
What to expect

Templates in Toolbox, next to TextExpander

Where Toolbox is as good or better, and where it's different. Where TextExpander does more, we say so.

Different

  • Chrome only: TextExpander also has apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and iPad.
  • No shared team snippets.
  • No script snippets.

Questions

Something else? Write to us from the Contact link below.

Do I export each group separately?

Yes. TextExpander exports one snippet group per CSV file. Drop each file into the importer in turn; each group's name becomes its folder.

What happens to fill-ins and popups?

Fill-in fields, fill-in areas and popup menus become Toolbox fill-in fields, and date, time, clipboard and cursor codes become their Toolbox versions. Filling them in when you insert needs Premium; on the free plan each blank keeps its default.

How many snippets can I import on the free plan?

The free plan holds 10 templates, so the importer offers to bring in the first 10. Premium removes the limit.

Is Toolbox free?

Yes. Every tool works on the free plan, with a few limits. Premium removes the limits and adds features like full-page captures and cloud storage, for every tool at once. Pro adds signatures, Office conversions and bookmark cleanups on top. You only add a card if you decide to upgrade.
